Learning Outcomes
* Summarize the historical roots of community development and organizing, advocacy, and social movements.
* Analyze community systems and structures, and design and evaluate processes to initiate and sustain change through specific strategies, tactics, activities and social policy advocacy.
* Record, assess, and reflect on experiences with community and the influence of human services values, attitudes, and ethics in relationship to community change.
* Analyze the systemic issues related to culture, diversity, and social class in the context of community systems.
* Analyze community systems and structures, and design and evaluate processes to initiate and sustain change through specific strategies, tactics, activities and social policy advocacy.
* Record, assess, and reflect on experiences with community and the influence of human services values, attitudes, and ethics in relationship to community change.

Assignment
Class Attendance and Participation
Every core class provides the opportunity to practice extemporaneous speaking, group facilitation, interviewing, and active listening skills. Students are expected to be on time, observe the time set for breaks, and stay for all of class.
Concept Papers
Articulate a concept from the assigned reading that is of interest to you. Include (a) a brief summary of the concept (include page numbers) and (b) how the concept relates to one or more of the learning outcomes. (c) Tell the class what you would like to discuss related to (a) and (b).
Online Participation
Each student will be assigned to an online group for discussion. In addition to the concept paper posted in one message, each student should post two substantive comments in response to the concept papers posted by other group members. Comments should be posted on two different dates.
Research Report
The goal of this assignment is for students to TEACH the topics to other students. Researching an aspect of the topic by reading one book and other academic resources.
Panel Discussions
Each student will discussing the content of his or her individual paper in the context of understanding community systems. The panel will lead a discussion of why the topic is important in the context of community development, organizing, human services, and professional development. The intent of this assignment is to add or emphasize information to course content.
Issue Advocacy and Meeting Assessment Paper
Attend a meeting and assess the structure of the meeting for accomplishing the stated purposes. Attend a meeting in the community (e.g., city or county council meeting, grassroots organizing meeting, advocacy group, political meeting). The meeting must include the opportunity for citizen action and participation. Must include a copy of the agenda, fact sheet of pros and cons, checklist of what you want to observe during the meeting, and notes from the meeting.
Strategic Plan
In-class assignment in determining how to resolve a dilemma by developing a strategic plan that will accommodate the needs of all members of the community.
Photo Essay
Collaborate with peers on presenting concepts through photos in relation to coursework.
Final Paper
In this paper, you should synthesize and integrate information from course materials including texts, articles, websites, and the reports and dialogue of others.
