Learning Outcomes
*Student will describe and analyze historical development of HS, and the resulting range of contemporary careers in HS.
*Student will describe a range of reasons HS exists in a culture, and articulate where knowledge of diversity impacts delivery of services.
*Student will compare and contrast philosophies & theoretical models.
*Student will demonstrate understanding and application of professional ethical use of guidelines.

Assignments
Reading & Participation
Reading assignments are preparation for class discussions. Read the text with critical consciousness: take notes, question answers, underline items of new learning, and identify key ideas you wish to explore.
Photo Voice Pics & Narrative Description
Each photo voice assignment is concentrated on a single question, such as 1) What is Human Services? 2) Who is served by the field of human services? 3) What are the challenges facing the human services profession?
Quizzes
Four quizzes will be given throughout the quarter. Quizzes will include multiple choice, short answer, and fill-in the blank questions and cover material directly from the text.
Paper Topic
This will be a typed paragraph description of your chosen topic.
Mid-Term
The mid-term will cover material from the first five weeks of reading, lecture, and class discussion.
Course Paper
In a seven page paper (plus reference and title pages), address the history of your chosen topic noting significant measurements of progress such as prominent leaders, legislation, and shifts in social attitudes.
Social Change/Political Activity
This assignment is designed to engage the Systems Change stream of Human Services and give you a sense of participatory democracy and collective action. You will give a 5-minute presentation about the event and your reflection during one of two final class sessions.
